3000db -- Asking an Arch user "what distro do you use"
deleted ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0.4014 [^^^What ^^^is ^^^this?](https://pastebin.com/FcrFs94k/49495)
This is such an underrated comment
This was brave. The downvoters just don’t get you.
I came here expecting that to be the last thing on the list.
I'd like to interject for a moment.
30000dB: Calling Linux an Operating System in front of an enlightened
# ACTUALLY, WHAT YOUR REFERRING TO AS "LINUX" IS GNU/LINUX, OR AS I HAVE TAKEN TO CALLING IT, GNU + LINUX, THIS IS BECAUSE GNU IS THE OPERATING SYSTEM THAT RUNS ON THE LINUX KERNEL. LINUX ITSELF IS NOT AN OPERATING SYSTEM.
You forgot the shampoo falling down in the shower.
The Dad sneeze.
Lol, try a HP Pavilion laptop *running Windows 10*… **while idle**. That thing is loud, Jesus.
At least it's not in power mode. Holy shit they become loud
My prof uses one ... you can hear it in the neighboring lecturing hall
Without power mode, it's just too slow to realistically use in a setting where there's people around you
Well, good thing my pavillion's fan doesn't work anymore. So now I only have elementary (I just like how it looks) on my machine
Ah? Mine overheats while in idle, how can you use it without a fan?
I think you have to use it in the fridge. Or maybe in Siberia.
My old HP 14 doesn't have a cooler.
Whats with the gnome hate lately ?
Is it because of the new release?
It actually works smoother now...
Shhh we don't talk about that here
It's a bandwagon effect. Years ago, GNOME was rewritten to be released as GNOME 3. Some users got angry at the GNOME team for daring to release something that wasn't exactly the same as the previous version, and won't let it go. Points of interest:
1. Until recently, GNOME3 had a memory leak, which wasn't terribly serious and easily cleared.
3. Some of the more anachronous features have been removed from the default configuration and replaced by extensions, such as they systray and the ability to litter your desktop with shortcuts and various other icons. This was incredibly offensive in certain circles.
4. Installing extensions to get around this is incredibly upsetting for a minority of users. There are a few, fine-grained adjustments to themes that sometimes require the alteration of a CS file, which could take, in extreme cases, *several minutes*.
5. Lacking a sense of belonging, there are some who seek to capitalise on this by making memes and various other comments so they can feel part of a group united in discontent. They may or may not have direct experience of using GNOME.
6. GNOME 3, although now slimmer than it has been for many years, uses more resources than other DEs, and as a result, users who lack the ability to configure their systems correctly are going to be punished a bit harder for it than they would with other desktops.
I'm not sure of it's the vocal majority. I was a GNOME 2 user, but GNOME 3 after 3.18 I felt was solid. I only use a handful of extensions, on essentially bone stock GNOME (with a theme, because man is stock GNOME UGLY). I've only recently started trying out KDE, and I ended up making it function very similar to GNOME. My biggest complaint is AppFolders being touchy persisting between sessions.
I’m just gonna leave this here. https://youtu.be/Z-moXUALZtw
Aside from the somewhat forced (but obligatory) Stalin reference, that's pretty much perfect.
It struck a chord as to the similarity between "GNOME 2 was perfect and should never have been changed" and "I'll never upgrade from Windows XP/7/8/etc".
I actually like Gnome and all GTK+ related, but I absolutely hate their menu. It just feels so littered and my mind can't just accept the fact that everything is done via 3rd party extensions
And breaks on extensions
It's gotten better but it's still trash
lipstick on a pig
Modern desktop with all the bells and whistles I'd go with KDE plasma, on every machine(not low end hardware) I have that gnome loves to lag on KDE runs like butter moving windows nice and smooth.
Otherwise you can go with any low resource desktop you like, i3, mate, xfce, openbox etc
> Whats with the gnome hate lately ?
Gnome has been hated for 20 years, there's no change lately. If anything, I think it's surprising how much Gnome is liked and accepted these days, I still think it's terrible.
That's because Gnome 3 is a terrible interface.
But why is it loud?
Fan noise? Something else?
The guy behind you is shouting about how you shouldn't use gnome.
Mine is pretty quiet :p
Scale stops at 194 dB, which is why you don't see a Dell 1950.

I am the ~~1%~~ 0.00004%
good bot! :P
Shouldn't it be "a laptop trying to do anything useful"?
Can confirm. Just had to build `polybar-git` and my laptop turned into a wind turbine
I use mine for [[email protected]](http://foldingathome.org). I have a GTX 1060 in mine. It heats my room at night in the winter. The white noise isn't bad either, though my Cisco switches are louder.
EDIT: Linked the site to keep it from linking incorrectly as an email.
When I hold down left arrow:
3000db -- A gnome user
Still a lot less loud than a PC running windows 10
I saw a post that someone was working on making “Gnome 3 lite”
a server running gnome...
Somebody forgot to install a power daemon.
And if you go up a few decibels you will encounter the advertisement on a porn popup.
LOL... That’s why I xfce.
I'm missing Falcon Heavy after shotgun ... :D
Hey, Gnome isn't THAT bad anymore. I tried it yesterday with Pop!_OS and it wasn't half bad. Ok, i installed Manjaro KDE after 30min but even the animations were butter smooth on this 2010 machine.
Antergos with its default openbox install is pretty good. I'm using it on an old vaio that has 2 gigs of ram and an i3-2310. Runs okay until I fire up firefox.
Well, the last release is not that bad, give them a chance!
What about KDE Plasma? That shit gives me the creeps.
Have been using Gnome for years without any problem.
He didn't say 'desktop'.
